If you’re looking for something truly unique in Matsuzaki, don’t miss the Izu-no-Chohachi Museum. It showcases the work of Irie Chohachi, a local-born artist who became famous back in the early 18th century for creating incredible art using shikkui (stucco).
What makes his work so special is the way he made his stucco. By mixing seaweed into lime, Chohachi created a formula that stuck beautifully to walls and allowed for amazing detail. Using a tool called a kote (like a flat trowel), he crafted scenes so intricate that the museum even provides magnifying glasses so you can spot details like how many people are riding in a boat—or even what they’re eating!
The museum displays about 50 of his works, and while he taught others, no one ever matched his skill. Today, his technique is a rare and almost lost art, which makes visiting this museum feel even more special.
The Izu-no-Chohachi Museum is conveniently located near the Itokawa Guest House. Check the map below for directions, and make sure to add it to your Matsuzaki itinerary.
